Tex and the Horseheads
Tex and the Horseheads were an LA based Punk Rock band who were a big part of the punk rock scene in the early 1980's that didn't have massive success but had a cult following that was substantial. They were one of the first band's to mix country and punk to produce the beautiful sound that we have come to know as Cow Punk. It really is music to my ears. My dad loved country so it is etched into all my childhood memories but to push that music into the LA punk sound is music made in heaven.
What I love about Texacala, Rock Vodka, Smog Vomit and Mike is their music is timeless. It sounds just as interesting today as it did back on the day that it was released. 'Jailed Again' is a song for the ages.
'Oh Mother' is the first song on their self titled debut album. From the moment I heard it, I couldn't get enough. It is not surprising that so many bands in the LA punk rock scene were influenced by this band.
The second and final album was 'Life's So Cool'. It was produced by John Doe, from X, which was another band leading the vanguard of the punk rock movement on the West Coast. A lot of Tex and the Horseheads' songs are themed around Texacala's real-life struggles. I think that is what makes them so compelling.
Texacala moved to Austin and the show was over but the music lives on.
